I love recycled glass - it always has this lovely blue patina that works so well with wood tones.We have several re purposed wood tables that my brilliant husband made that are perfect for make shift altars in out door weddings and after getting in a shipment of gorgeous recycled vases we decided to put together a tiny shoot using these elements. We've actually done something like this here for a beach wedding but wanted to change it up by incorporating the hanging lanterns as well as different vases. My yard is filled with camellias but all reds and hot pinks so I wandered over to my neighbor Amy's yard where I knew I'd find the perfect , tiny pink "Chinese rose " camellia. Just a quick look at an upcoming post- I love working with anything berried or fruited- it adds so much to the design.

This ceremony was at "the other side of the lighthouse".. my new favorite on Bald Head Island.

Love the lanterns hanging from the tree- gorgeous old oak.

Peonys,ranunculus ,dusty miller and lamb's ear are ideal for that soft look.

Bridesmaids bouquets were garden roses,ranunculus and raspberries.

Happy Autumn!

It's been a very busy season full of weddings and lovely inspiration. Here's a recent Secret Garden inspired shoot that we did at the City Club along with Theo Milo Photography and Joanne Miranda Designs.It first appeared on our blog Wilmington Weddings yesterday. I love the muted colors paired with the succulents. The table/altar covered with the sheer fabric is a perfect anchor for a garden ceremony. I included velvet millinery leaves in the bouquet along with lots of Japanese poppies and lots of soft lamb's ear.
I covered an old wrought iron chair with moss accents and also included an old ,care worn copy of The Secret Garden that I've had since I was a child. This was so much fun and I can't wait to take it from an inspiration to reality.

We've got a tiny break between weddings- here are some of what we've been up to and what we're planning.

As you know we've launched a wedding blog Wilmington Weddings and we are enjoying every minute of it! We've met so many wonderful vendors in an around Wilmington as well as many as far away as California and the UK. We're getting ready to expand or as we like to refer to it "Phase Deaux" of Wilmington Weddings so be sure to check it out.

I'm in that crazy time right now where we're in the middle of heavy wedding season while planning August and beginning Fall weddings - lots to do and plan and the best part...buy!Below are some of the goods coming in for future gorgeous weddings!

Whew! It's been a wonderful/crazy month for us ! We've launched a brand new blog Wilmington Weddings, , managed to do a small kitchen/office/ mud room re hab as well as diving into wedding season.

Every year Tippi Hedren sends us an autographed photo to be auctioned off at our fundraiser Wilimington Fur Ball which is a black tie event that raises money for no-kill animal shelters.Every year for 5 years this icon has taken time to remember us....

She has devoted much time and effort to charitable causes: she is a volunteer International Relief Coordinator for "Food for the Hungry". She has traveled worldwide to set up relief programs following earthquakes, hurricanes, famine and war, and has received numerous awards for her efforts, including the "Humanitarian Award" presented to her by the Baha'i Faith. As for animal causes, she is founder and President of the "Roar Foundation" a preserve for exotic animals that educates and advocates for them.

Okay, okay so we are sort of implying that having not one but TWO weddings featured at the SAME TIME in print is proof that we have not ONLY talent but also character.....we certainly like to think so.

Yes,we have a wedding featured in The Knot North Carolina Spring/Summer issue 2011...as well as a wedding featured in Weddings Unveiled Winter issue2011.

This is actually a really fortuitous thing happening now when we're in the throes of a huge project- timing really is everything.The wedding Gods have surely smiled upon us.What a perfect way to begin the new year!

Meredith was a great girl and I so enjoyed the early planning stages back and forth with her mother , Sheridan. Sometimes you meet the most fascinating people while putting together a wedding.

Christmas at Dane Cottage or Here comes Santa Paws

When my husband and I bought this house we decide to name it.....because it just seemed like a house that should have a name ..besides it makes for great looking personal stationary.Plus it's veddy british don't you know.

In England the rich used to name their homes according to ancestry location and title.Norfolk House (Duke of), Belvoir Castle (overlooking the Belvoir Valley); Castle Droge (named after a 13th ancestor) etc.

We are neither rich nor titled.

We chose the name Dane Cottage because of our great danes who we love and spoil.

City Club

The City Club at De Rosset is a lovely old manse that has been converted to a private club here in Wilmington.We were asked to help with Christmas decor this year. The club was recently renovated in soft silvery/sage hues with beautiful gold ceilings.

I immediatly thought of lots of mercury glass , accents of cool birch bark ,dusty miller and silvery brunei berries.

The fleur de lis silver votives are the same votives used in this year's Christmas decor for the Vice Presidents Residence. Having been a part of the decor team for the VP residence in the past I know how carefully they select their look and am happy to be in such good design company this year.

Silver glittered turtle doves rested in a mossy nest with a warm Christmas message.

Jeweled mercury ornaments filled a vintage apothecary jar.

The back diningroom has warmer tones so we wrapped vases and votives with golden beeswax sheets . Some were used as vases for the dusty miller and berries and the others were holding pillar candles for a soft glow.

To finish we placed two traditional Christmas Belsnickel figurines.

Inspired by my childhood memories of Christmas ribbon candy we filled vintage apothecary jars with all the colors of the rainbow.

A very Vintage Christmas

THE house..the most wonderful house..an absolute dream to decorate for Christmas. Imagine my surprise when the Wrightsville Beach Magazine folks contacted us to help with their very special anniversary/Christmas issue and they mentioned the Landis-Smith house. I spent many a lazy summer afternoon in this house,listening to the surf ,sprawled over one of the cots on the porch while engrossed in a big ,thick beach read , cooked shrimp while sipping a crisp glass of wine in the tiny kitchen with two(yes two) stoves.

We had rented the house several summers in a row and for me this was a labor of love..in fact I remember saying to my husband that I would love to decorate this house for Christmas.

The walls spoke to me of long summer days with sunburned shoulders ,sand on the floor and naps.Cocktails and cheese straws for the adults in the evenings while the children slipped off to bedrooms that always seemed to have just enough of a breeze to sleep comfortably . And always the sound of the waves.

We had a very beachy magazine shoot a couple weeks ago. Wrightsville Beach Magazine asked us along with two other designers to style a fantastic beach cottage/manse at Wrightsville Beach.Lot's of fun filled days were had by all. Above is Ernie the resident feline and our candy cane inspired Yule beach bike along with a very important message for Santa.

Someone may have been on the naughty list.

Gold, Frankincense and......Fur

Tomorrow is our beloved fundraiser The Wilmington Fur Ball, a black tie ,red carpet event that my husband and I produce and chair every year. This will be our 5th year, we've raised over $60,000 since we began and we could not be more proud.

It's vital to be a part of the community and even though it's very important to us to be fabulous etc...all the recognition means nothing if you're holed up in a backroom doing nothing but planning the next event/look.

Spearheading the Fur Ball has given us more joy and satisfaction than I could heve ever dreamed of as well as put us in touch with the "best" people-and when I say that I don't mean "best" the way it's used by small minded social climbers(you know who you are) : ) I mean the absolute best, shiniest ,most giving ,loving people.

Thank you Wilmington for answering the call for abused and neglected animals. We have given a voice to those who had none

Marissa-smart ,sophisticated , beautiful and as big as a minute said to me "no white flowers" and there were none.
Not a speck. Nada.Ne Rien.
There was however....color and loads of it-beautiful vibrant, happy color. Lovely,dreamy cream capiz shell bowls filled with succulent blossoms and vases spilling over with intensely beaming hot house orchids lit by hammered silver votives.

Where- Porters Neck Country Club Event Director Nicki McLaughlin and have we mentioned how much we love her? Because we do.Can we talk about smooth running events? Can we talk about the most courteous staff ? We can't say enough.

The brilliant team and I are busily plotting and planning for several Christmas projects that are around the corner.These shots are inspiration for a charming very old very chic beach house/cottage/castle that we've been invited to decorate for a magazine issue.

I 'm especially delighted because my family and I have stayed in said cottage several times and I always dreamed how it would look properly dressed for the holidays.

Several local designers will also take part in the project..can't wait to see what they come up with....can imagine though.. ; )

Anne McGowan and I put our heads together and styled an inspiration wedding shoot at the City Club recently.Watch for my beautiful great dane Stonewall Jackson -he was a groomsman.

We made teeny,weeny, terrariums in test tubes as gifts for guests. Found a darling little heart stamp for the corks.

My fav new design ..terrariums,large and small.

We had a blast with this style shoot at The City Club ,Wilmington . Sarah and Ryen were a wonderful couple to work with. Sara was so beautiful and poised-what a pleasure! Sally, Sarah’s mom is my new best friend we had such a great time planning.The colors of the wedding were lifted from a very old,very tiny Wedgwood thimble ,hence the Wedgwood blue hues.The groomsmen wore bachelor buttons and lavender flowers and Sarah carried peonies and David Austin roses along with hand blown glass flowers tucked in her bouquet.

Hello everyone-we’ve been busy with lots of plans and re working and hiring and okay ..yes..pool time with the dogs.
Haven’t had a minute for the blog but we’re back today with another beautiful wedding shot by the talented Team Millie Holloman Photography.
Diane was a lovely bride and a pleasure to work with.I LOVE the ring bearers pillow with the aqua ribbon and the succulent accent-it was perfect for her relaxed look.One thing though…we’re not sure how this happened but it appears the groom is wearing a corsage and not a boutonniere ..???
Also another reason to love Diane she has a beautiful new puppy named Fozzy Bear who we fell in love with.

Friday Buzz: Wedding Design Arsenal- must haves in your toolbox

It’s important to have several staples in your tool box for on site set up. We actually have 2 tool boxes that are usually packed and ready to go.

First and foremost your knife as well as extras

a couple sets`of garden clippers

Extra ribbon that matches what you’re already using for the wedding plus back up generic colors

Several colors and sizes of pearl head pins

A couple different gauges of florist wire

Floral tape-corsage type as well as for containers

Glue gun and glue sticks

tooth picks(great for “pretend” stems`on non organic flowers to decorate the cake)

glass cleaning wipes

cotton hand towels

Chenille stems (pipe cleaners if you’re a civilian)

Twine

Fishing line

Duck tape(for exposed cords and also very handy for picking up flower petals from table linens)

Long neck lighters(for reaching inside votives)

Water tubes

Organic bug spray-this is`a must for outdoor set ups!

Portable first aid kit

And finally-always bring an assortment of replacement florals especially this time`of year with this scorching heat.I also usually pack several extra vases in case we lose one or two due to transport breakage.

A ready toolbox can insure a smooth sailing wedding no matter what the wedding gods throw at you.

Friday Buzz: Why we work so hard

This weeks Friday buzz I’m actually writing on Thursday.We are expecting a big thunderstorm so as usual here the temperature has dropped dramatically the sky has become dark and it feels still.Tomorrow is a busy design day with two weddings on the island so with this sudden lull I’m taking time to cook a hearty summer supper. Roasted organic chicken (the best recipe comes from Gourmet Magazine cookbook) sizzling in the oven, fresh green beans slow cooked with tiny new potatos and bits of bacon and finally a garden salad with a little blue cheese roasted yellow beets and a raspberry vinaigrette.The dogs are snoring softly spread out on the floor and couches and there’s a brand new mystery picked up from the library this morning waiting patiently to be opened.

I treasure these quiet bits of time between the mad wedding rushes.It helps me remember exactly why we work so hard.

Friday Buzz: Flowers in the house

It’s so important to make your home a place that you are happy and comfortable in. Flowers in a vase can literally change the feel of a room and it’s not pricey especially this time of year – and especially in the southeastern North Carolina area. Gardenias are prolific right now as well as magnolias. Pick a couple gardenias and place them in a vase at your bedside. Place a magnolia blossom in a low dish for a fragrant, dramatic centerpiece on your dining room table. I have several large planters filled with blooming begonias and I cut several stems and placed them in an old pitcher on my kitchen table. And here’s a fun idea – when my basil becomes out of control I snip off several stems and place them in a small vase in my bathrooms – they are a very eco friendly room freshener as well as pleasing to the eye.

Friday Buzz: Engagement photo shoots

We love working with brides who like to have fun with their engagement sessions – it’s a great opportunity to reveal your and your fiance’s inner goofball. Ask your event designer to provide you with some fun props – we have an ampersand ( &) that we like the couple to hold between them for a cute Bride AND (get it… AND) Groom shot. I have a pretty rhinestone tiara that no girl can resist and we just got in a huge Peace sign. Carry a big basket of flowers. (not goofbally at all but just plain lovely) The point is have fun and enjoy this very, very special short time that you have before your wedding. Try to embrace every single moment, and above all relax.

We are very passionate about design and living the very best life and along with that goes giving back, making this world a better place than when you found it. I love this time of year because it’s all done outdoors. Fire up the grill, throw together the basics grilled chicken (organic), potato salad, cole slaw, strawberry short cake, (strawberrys and vegetables bought locally) put up a couple 6 foot tables, cover them in creamy canvas drop cloths place lots of LED pillar candles and glass lanterns with votives (they make really natural looking ones and the stay lit! ) grab some pots of fresh herbs and flowers from the garden for centerpieces fill a big galvanized bucket with sparkling lemonade, beer and wine put some Stephane Grappelli on the cd player and you’re good to go.

Meredith and John, a lovely wedding at The Shoals

We published this before on our old blog, but decided to repost it here to do justice to the beautiful photographs by Whitebox Photography.
Meredith and John wanted a beach chic wedding at the Shoals Club. Meredith has spent her life coming to this beautiful, magical barrier island off the coast of North Carolina. We covered the ceremony pergola with pink jasmine for a simple look. The bride carried seasonal peonys and white phaleonopsis orchids. We fashioned starfish for boutonnierres as per the bride’s request and decorated the site with glass lanterns, candlelight and hung capiz shell chandeliers from the clear tent where the dancing happened. A good time was had by all and we’re told that several groomsmen ended the night in the pool! Thanks so much to Tabatha Walsh event coordinator at the Shoals Club -she is amazing and kept everything running smoothly.
